Is Theresa May the new iron lady? Strengths and Frailties of the British Prime Minister
2016 was a big year for the UK. Indeed, this was the year brexit was chosen by the British population. But it is also the year T.May became prime minister of Great Britain. She is the second woman to reach the highest political position of the UK after M.Thatcher.
Woman in politik often seem weaker as men but T.May like M.Thatcher seems very strong. They both are strong political figures who don't give up their positions.
How did T.May managed to become the “new iron lady” for the British Population?
A carrier of a fighter
T.May seems to be a very strong and strict political leader, that’s why she reminds M.Thatcher. Both of them seem to be firm and authoritarian. They both have a very decided politicy.
But most of all what show the strength of a political leader is his accession to power.
T.May was born in Eastbourne in 1956. After a catholic school she went to Oxford University where she graduated of geography degree. She first worked for Bank of England. She started politics in 1986 but she suffered multiple electoral defeats. She was already à fighter who didn’t give up. Eleven years after her political starts she was elected member of parliament in 1997.
She is then in the shadow cabinet so in the Government opposition. In 1999 she became the education secretary of the shadow cabinet and in 2001 she moved to the transport secretary.
In 2002 she became the first female Chairman of the Conservative Party (it means the responsible of the party administration). David Cameron appointed her Shadow Leader of the House of Commons in December 2005 after his accession to the leadership. In 2010, May was appointed Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equality by Prime Minister David Cameron as part of his first Cabinet.
As Home Secretary she had a lot of success that made her a popular government figure.
For example she successfully negotiated the extradition of Abu Qatada what was an expensive negotiation for more than 10 years. She also had à very strict immigration policy. For instance she rejected the EU proposal about hosting syrian refugees.
In 2016 she announced that she was running for the leadership of the tories after the resignation of David Cameron. She wants the tories unity about the brexit which was the main theme of her campaign. Her only opponent gave up and she became the new leader of the party and the new prime minister of the United Kingdom.
She made a sweeping reshuffle (it means that she changed almost all the previous government) with several eurosceptic personalities like Boris Johnson or David Davis.
She announced that the Brexit will set in 2017 after a year of negotiation. She took the opportunity of the Trump’s election in order to reinforce the economic relationships with the US.
On 18 April 2017, May announced that she would call a parliamentary vote to hold an early general election in june 2017. She wanted to confirm the support of the population and increase the tories majority. After a campaign disrupt by two terrorist attack in London and manchester, the conservative party didn’t reach the result expected.
She was listed by Forbes as the second most powerful woman in the world in 2017.
Since then she is leading the UK with à very conservative policy. The Brexit hasn’t occurred yet. Indeed She is still leading the negotiation with the EU.
Her carrier illustrate her strength and her determination. She lost a lot of round but she always came back on the boxing ring.
We also can see her talent by her ability to very quickly rise to the top of her country.
She knows how to take opportunities as she did after the referendum about the brexit.
We can understand why she is considered as à very harsh and strong prime minister since her carrier represents à woman who never gives up and always fight for her goals.
B) Common point with M.Thatcher
T.May is often compared to M.Thatcher. Indeed the former prime minister was called the iron lady for her harshness and T.May is now called by à lot of news papers the “new iron lady”. Actually they have à lot of common points. As we have just seen, T.May and margaret thatcher both symbolize à strong authority as prime minister. They never gave up their positions. The public opinion describes the two lady as hard political figures.
Moreover they both have firm opinion about the british politicy: Thatcher was very liberal and May fights really hard for the brexit.
Like Thatcher, T May has à very solid electoral base in the conservative. Even if she is criticized à lot and has à lot of opponents she keeps the support of the conservative voters.
Moreover Thatcher was very close to R. Reagan the former président of the US and May is trying to be closer to D.Trump the actual président of the US.
Finally we can see that they really look the same. We might think that is not important but in fact it can be à reason why the public opinion compare the two ladies.
As we see in this graph the british population think that M.Thatcher is the former prime minister that looks like the most to T.May. We can hope that May will not finish her political career like M.Thatcher…
It is easy to understand that à lot of people compare T.May to M.Thatcher since they have à lot of common points. But we also know that M.Thatcher political career didn’t end very well because her authority was contested. Will it be the same for T.May?
C) The limits of May’s authority
Even if May appear to be à very strong prime minister she encounters a lot of difficulties in her job.
First she is in à difficult position about the brexit since the parliament is divided. Eurosceptics dont want too much compromises with the EU. They want an hard brexit , it means that they want to leave the EU without negotiating any conditions. The UK would then leave the customs union. In the other hand the soft brexiteers don't want to end every relationship with the EU. For instance they want to stay in the customs union and to keep the EU citizenships advantages for the EU citizens in the UK. The tories are therefore divided. That is exactly what T.May fights against since she is the leader of the tories. In this mess that shake the party, theresa may is pressured by both side.
Even if she were not advocate of the brexit before she became PM, she tried to apply brexit since 2016 but she never clearly expressed her position about an hard or à soft brexit.
However her goals has been seriously reconsidered since the election of 2017. Indeed, after calling new election in order to consolidate her power, she lost lots of seats in the parliament. This failure led tory MPs to call into question the ability of T. May to achieve the brexit. In december 2017, a very important vote in the british parliament showed the tory division. 11 tories voted against Theresa May for a right of veto on the final Brexit agreement. It mean that T.May needs now the support of the legislative power in the negotiation with the EU.
The brexit that she expected is now compromised because of the 11 rebellious backbenchers.
Then the popularity polls reveals the confusions of the population. The popularity of Theresa may is very inconstant. It shows that besides the MP’s contestations there are à lot of contestation in the british population.
Also we can see that even if T.May is à strong political leader, she has à lot of opponent that destabilized her authority.
To sum up, we can understand why is May called the New iron Lady. First because she represent the harshness because of her carrier. Then because she has à lot of common points with M.Thatcher. But even if the new iron lady is very strong, her authority is challenged by àn increasing opposition and by à division of her party.
