Merci d'avance

We studied an extract from a novel entitled The heart is a lonely hunter by Carson Mc. Cullers which was published in 1940. The extract is the incipit of the novel. The incipit of this novel is about the friendship between two mutes named Spiros Antonopoulos and John Singer, the reader follow them during a journey. In what extent does this text is representative of the initiatory journey?

First, we can say that this extract is representative of the initiatory journey because the structure of the text represents a whole day in characters’ lives from the morning to the night. This day is not a particular day in their lives but it’s part of their daily routine. This is emphasized by the use of adverbs like “usually” or “sometimes” and also by the modal “would” which expresses the idea of habit. The notion of repetition is enhanced by the circular structure of the text as the two mutes’ handicap is only mentioned at the beginning and at the end of the text.

Finally, this text is representative of the initiatory journey because of the chronological form of the story. This is our initiatory journey as mute persons. This text makes me think about Robinson Crusoe, the famous story by Daniel Defoe because when he arrives on the island he has to adapt to his new living conditions, we can guess that it’s like a disability to him but he achieves to find solutions to live as a normal person, a bit as the two protagonists.
Bonjour

The reader …. Ce n'est pas la traduction de "journée" TO what extent does this text reflect an initiatory journey?

bonjour

OUF je viens de voir ton message qui m'a rassurée;

Si jamais (car cela s'est déjà produit ) tu n'as pas passé ton oral ,écris -moi ici ce que tu as proposé si tu veux que j'y jette un coup d'œil.

🙂
Bonjour!
Merci d'avance 🙂 🙂

We studied an extract from a novel entitled The heart is a lonely hunter by Carson Mc. Cullers which was published in 1940. The extract is the incipit of the novel. The incipit of this novel is about the friendship between two mutes named Spiros Antonopoulos and John Singer, the reader follow them during a journey. To what extent does this text is representative of the notion meeting the other, love and friendship?

First, we can say that this extract is representative of the notion meeting the other, love and friendship because their friendship is an asset: it is their strength. Actually, their friendship helps them to fit into society and prevent them for being excluded as the two characters help each other. Moreover, the description of the two characters shows how different they are. Physically speaking Singer is thin whereas Antonopoulos is obese, and Singer is well dressed, in contrast Antonopoulos looks messy, for example. Then, Antonopoulos seems to be in a daze whereas Singer is grounded. Besides, the focus on the characters’ eyes from l.7 to l.9 “Half closed eyelids” / “His eyes had a quick intelligent expression” shows that one of them looks silly while the other seems smart. It also suggests that there is a mirror effect between their inside and their outside. It’s said that people’s eyes mirror their souls. The characters’ physical differences mirror their moral opposition.
Thus, differences bring them together.

Finally, this text is representative of the notion meeting the other, love and friendship because the two protagonists are share the same disability and so the same difficulties in life. But finally they are very different, physically speaking and morally speaking, and their differences bring them together. We can also notice that thanks to their friendship they aren’t isolated from society, this shows the power of friendship. This text makes me think about Pride and prejudice because the two lovers are very different and they have to override their difference to realize that they are ordained for each other, and when they accept and undertake their love, they are stronger together.
Bonsoir!

Oral d'anglais sur The Heart is a Lonely Hunter

We studied an extract from a novel entitled The heart is a lonely hunter by Carson Mc. Cullers which was published in 1940. The extract is the incipit of the novel. The incipit of this novel(tu vois ici c'est une redondance complètement inutile et on a vraiment d'emblée le sentiment que tu cherches à "alloner la sauce et ce n'est pas un ticket gagnant au bac cela ,donc tu peux mettre: it is about the friendship between two mutes named Spiros Antonopoulos and John Singer: the reader follows them during a ?? journey. To what extent does this text enhance the theme of an encounter with the other, the enfolding of love and friendship?

First,(je crois que je vais cesser de te dire que "first "est très maladroit car j'ai dû le corriger ou moins trois fois maintenant et je t'ai déjà expliqué que ce n'était pas "joli" 🙄 we can say that this extract enhances this notion because the friendship between the two men is an asset: it is their strength. Actually, their friendship helps(attention aux répétitions avec la suite du mot "help"donc ici tu mets: enables /allows them to fit into society and prevents them from being excluded as the two characters help each other. It is intersting to underline that if the two protagonists have the same disability , they do not have the same appearance or personality: Singer is thin whereas Antonopoulos is obese. Moreover, Antonopoulos is unfit to live in the world (he will be put in an asylum) whereas Singer is grounded and deeply cares for his friend. Besides, the focus on the characters’ eyes from l.7 to l.9 “Half closed eyelids”(for the greek character) / “His eyes had a quick intelligent expression”(for Singer) shows that one of them looks silly while the other seems smart. It also suggests that there is a reverse mirror effect between the two men(they are different from each other) ,yet a true mirror effect between their inside and their outside (c'est un peu maladroit mais cela passe) It is a common sense view that people’s eyes mirror their souls. The characters’ physical differences mirror their moral opposition.
Interestingly enough Singer (his cheerful name is to be stressed) is the one that holds the friendship together .Even if these two souls seem to be facing the same disability , their part in their common journey is uneven (inégal)

I have chosen to compare this incipit of a strong journey on the path of friendship between two men with two different personalities, with another strong bond : love In Pride and prejudice by Jane Austen we also find two protagonists who (et voici une belle expression) seem to be the poles apart : ,(j'ai oublié le nom de l'héroîne, zut)…….comes from a family composed only of women (to be married !) and is a character who is independent yet who is natural. She meets Darcy who holds a prestigious social rank and who at first seems a bit stiff; With time they also go through a journey that leads them to mutual understanding and support . They understand that they have common points ,their intelligence and wits (l'esprit) and they finally fall in love. In this novel their differences are also a facade (à prononcer à la française pratiquement)avec un "a" grave 'fecaaade".

The two men's friendship that helps them overcome difficulties and leads them on the track of an journey in The heart is a lonely hunter can therefore ,in my eyes be compared to the love that eventually (qui est un faux ami et veut dire finally ) unites the two protagonists in Pride and prejudice;

Voilà pourquoi un incipit me paraît trop court et oui je pense qu'il fat chercher un autre thème :l'amitié (et l'amour dans ton exemple) qui est plus fort que les différences par exemple. je crois qu'il serait bien de t'en tenir à ça , c'est ce que ta prof a mis en avant;
Friendship stronger than differences ….

I’m going to talk about the notion Meeting the other, love and friendship. In order to illustrate this notion, I’m going to present three documents: The incipit of the novel, entitled The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, a good illustration of the US gothic novel, which was written by Carson M.C. Cullers and published in 1940, an extract of East of Eden by John Steinbeck, and also Tom and Huck in The adventure of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. What does these extract show about the protagonists’ relationship?

1- This extract is about the friendship between two disabled characters named Spiros Antonapoulos and John Singer, their commons points and their differences. So, this extract deals with isolation, darkness and unrequited love. I is interesting to underline that if the two protagonists have the same disability, their friendship allows them to fit into society and prevents them from being excluded, isolated as the two characters help each other. Consequently their friendship is an asset: it is their strength. Besides, they don’t have the same character: Singer is eager, quick whereas Antonapoulos is dreamy, a stupid smile, lazy. The focus on theirs eyes from l.7 to l.9 “Half closed eyelids” for Antonapoulos, “His eyes had a quick intelligent expression” for Singer shows that one of them looks dumb/silly while the other seems smart. Furthermore, the character’s physical differences reflect their moral oppositions. Interestingly, Singer is the one that holds the friendship together. Also, The main interest about Singer is Antonapoulos whereas Antonapoulos is eating. He embodies some of the Seven Deadly Sins (Lust- Sloth- Greed -Gluttony): he's greedy, he steals food from his cousin and he is slothful. Singer loves his friend Antonapoulos, endowing him with all kinds of god-like qualities. He is utterly blind to the fact that his friend is coarse, selfish and does not return his love, the very type of “outlandish” person Carson McCullers mentions. We can say that it is a father-son relationship because J. Singer takes care of Antonapoulos and protects him as if he were his son. Consequently, the relationship between the two characters is uneven and imbalanced. It is a one-way relationship as Singer gives more than Antonapoulos, who takes without giving back. We can guess that the differences between the two characters will eventually separate them.

This makes me think about an extract of East of Eden by John Steinbeck.

2- In this extracts Mrs and Mr Ames blame Cathy reproach her with being whimsical and acting like a child. "you're too big for that" l.18 "what does Miss Fancy think she's going to do?" l.22 Besides, both of them are angrier and angrier "vaguely he throated her with whipping if she did not obey him" However, the angrier they are, the colder and the more indifferent she is. Actually, she does not care about what they say. "Her face was expressionless and cold" l. 26
Mr and mrs Ames use different strategies when faced with daughter. Mrs Ames resorts to a dialogue to understand her daughter's problem, whereas Mr Ames resorts to a soliloquy and does not let Cathy react or respond. This is indicated by the use of direct speech in the 1st part (Mr Ames VS Cathy). It gives us the impression that the link between Mrs Ames and her daughter is stronger and that she is closer to her as she tries to communicate with her. Moreover, contrary to the mother who gets to the point by asking her daughter, the father beats about the bush as if he was afraid. It gives the sense that the to parents complete each other as they obviously need each other to solve their daughter's problems. Nevertheless, the two strategies prove to be a failure, as at the end of each confrontation, Mr and Mrs Ames feel frustrated and powerless. Cathy gets the upper hand over her parents.

Finally, the relationship between the two parents, which complete each other, can be compared to the meeting between the two protagonists Tom and Huck in the adventure of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

3- Indeed, Tom and Huck are great friends and have many adventures together in two novels. There are undoubtedly many things that Tom and Huck have in common, such as their age or their hometown, and both boys really have no parents! Both boys enjoy living deliberately. They seek adventure. They role play (pirates) go camping, and love to fish.
Although they are both orphans and friends, they had many differences. Tom lives a "civilized" life with an aunt who loves him and who is deeply concerned about his welfare. In contrast, Huck Finn is alone, has no home, and his father is the town drunkard, who beats him violently. Thus, Huck has no one to take care of him.
Also, their ways of life are completely different. Tom, who is a dreamer lead a life out of the romantic novels and can be fun and frustrating at the same time. Huck, very different, does not get involved the fantasies that Tom made and has little interest in them. He is more interested in what is happening right now and what happens in his life in the present.

Huck rarely leaves Tom aside, because the two oh them are like brothers. Huck and Tom are very mischievous, but Huck, due to his father being a drunk and feels uncomfortable in society. Fortunately, however, Tom is usually able to convince otherwise Huck. Later in the book, Tom and Huck find the treasure and divide it, revealing how good friends they were.
bonjour Fanyfour

I’m going to talk about the notion Meeting the other, love and friendship. I’m going to present three documents: The incipit of the novel, entitled The Heart is A lonely Hunter (j'enlève ..gothic,reste focalisée) which was written by Carson M.C. Singer is the one that holds the friendship together. Singer cares about his friend a lot while Antonapoulos cares about…..food. This makes me think about an extract of East of Eden by John Steinbeck.

2- In this extract, Mrs and Mr Ames blame their daughter Cathy (PEUX-TU DONNER SON ÄGE,)AND reproach her FROM acting like a child. "you're too big for that" l.18 "what does Miss Fancy think she's going to do?" l.22 Besides, both of them GET angrier and angrier "vaguely he throated her with whipping if she did not obey him" However, the angrier they are, the colder and the more indifferent she is. Actually, she does not care about what they say. "Her face was expressionless and cold" l. 26

Moreover, contrary to the mother who gets to the point by asking straight forward questions to her daughter, the father beats arounds the bush as if he was afraid. It gives the impression the parents need one another (pour 2 c'est mieux) to solve their daughter's problems. However the two strategies prove to be a failure, as at the end of each confrontation, Mr and Mrs Ames feel frustrated and powerless.

Finally, the relationship between the two parents, who complete one another , can be compared to the meeting between the two protagonists Tom and Huck in the Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn
3. Tom and Huck are great friends and have many adventures together in two novels. There are undoubtedly SHARE many thingS/ Tom and Huck ARE THE SAME AGE AND THEY HAVE THE SAME hometown, and ARE both SOMEHOW " ORPHANS"; Both boys enjoy LIFE AND seek adventure. They ACT AS PIRATES? go camping, and love fishING.
HOWEVER THEY COME FROM DIFFERNET SOCIAL BACKGROUNDS. Tom lives a "civilized" life with an aunt who loves him and who is deeply concerned about hiM. In contrast, Huck Finn is alone, has no home, and his father is the town drunkard, who beats him up . Huck has no one to take care of him.
Also, their ATTITUDES TOWARDS life are completely different. Tom, who is a dreamer, leadS a life THROUGH romantic novels and HAS HIS UPS AND DOWNS. Huck IS very different/ UNLIKE HIS FRIEND HE IS MORE DOWN TO EATH (IL A LES PIEDS SUR TERRE) . He is more interested in what is happening right now in the real world.

Huck rarely leaves Tom aside, because the two of them are like brothers. Huck and Tom are sometimes mischievous. Huck is NOT AT EASE IN THE COMPANY OF OTHERS BUT FORTUNATELY TOM IS THERE TO GUIDE HIM .AS THE STORY UNFOLDS BOTH BOYS SHARE EXPERIENCES (AND EVEN A TREASURE!) AND LEARN HOW TO RELY ON ONE ANOTHER.

AS A CONCLUSION I WOULD LIKE TO INSIST ON THE FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN TOM AND HUCK :NOT ONLY DO THE LEARN THANKS TO ONE ANOTHER ,THEY ALSO LEARN ABOUT THEMSELVES

AS THEY GO THROUGH VARIOUS EXPERIENCES THEY GROW MORE MATURE ANd SELF-CONFIDENT.IT IS A TRUE BILDUNGSROMAN (roman d'apprentissage où tu as une situation de départ et à l'arrivée des personnages qui ont évolué)AND CERTAINELY MARK TWAIN'S MASTERPIECE ;

🙂
Bonjour madame!

Bonjour

Oui tu a raison c'est encore trop long ! à l'attaque ! 😉

Bonjour,

mais non

trouve qui "parle" et dégage quelques figures de styles récurrentes (tu vois je t'avais dit de t'attarder sur le choix du nom de "singer" (le chanteur) qui est muet et qui apporte de l'écoute et de la joie…c'est court à dire. Concentre-toi sue tes extraits;

I’m going to talk about the notion Meeting the other, love and friendship. Cullers in 1940, an extract of (the) East of Eden by John Steinbeck, and also The adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. What do these extracts show us about the protagonists’ relationship?

1- The extract of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter is about the friendship between two disabled characters named Spiros Antonapoulos and John Singer who share the same disability: they are mutes. Interestingly enough, if the two protagonists have the same disability, their friendship allows them to fit into society and prevents them from being excluded as the two characters help each other. Consequently their friendship is an asset: it is their strength.
Besides, the first sentence of the novel “They were always together” clearly expresses a string friendship between them. In fact, the structure of the text is a chronological one; it represents an entire day in characters’ lives, from morning to night. Nevertheless, this extract shows that the two characters are different even if they may be similar on some points. Actually the narrator says “the two friends were very different”. Indeed, they do not have the same appearance: Singer is thin, tall, neatly dressed, whereas Antonapoulos is obese with a round face and seems scruffy. Furthermore, the character’s physical differences reflect their moral oppositions. Singer cares about his friend a lot while Antonapoulos cares about himself. We can say that it is a father-son relationship as Singer is protective towards his friend whereas Antonapoulos seems to don’t care about anything. Consequently, the relationship between the two characters is uneven and imbalanced.
All this makes me think about an extract of East of Eden by John Steinbeck.

2- In this extract, Mrs and Mr Ames blame their daughter, 16 year old, Cathy and reproach her from acting like a child "you're too big for that" l.18 "what does Miss Fancy think she's going to do?" l.22. Besides, both of them get angrier and angrier "vaguely he throated her with whipping if she did not obey him" However, the angrier they are, the colder and the more indifferent she is. The references to the characters’ eyes from l. 26 to l.42 “had to look away”; “suddenly she looked him right in the eyes”; “Her eyes did not seem to blink”) show the tension between Cathy and her parents. Here, the confrontation between the characters is more visual than verbal. Actually, she does not care about what they say. "Her face was expressionless and cold" l. 26 Mr and Mrs Ames use different strategies when faced with to their daughter. Mrs Ames resorts to a dialogue to understand her daughter's problem, whereas Mr Ames resorts to a soliloquy and does not let Cathy respond. This is indicated by the use of direct speech in the 1st part (Mr Ames VS Cathy). It gives us the impression that the link between Mrs Ames and her daughter is stronger and that she is closer to her as she tries to communicate with her. The situation gives us the impression that the parents need one another to solve their daughter's problems.
Finally, the relationship between the two parents, who complete one another , can be compared to the meeting between the two protagonists Tom and Huck in the Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

3- Tom and Huck are great friends and have many adventures together in two novels. There are undoubtedly share many things/ Tom and Huck are the same age and they have the same hometown, and are both somehow « orphans ». Both boys enjoy life and seek adventure. They act as pirates go camping, and love fishing. However they come from different social backgrounds. In order to show that the two boys complete each other, the author draw a parallelism between the two boys and their different way of life. Tom lives a "civilized" life with an aunt who loves him and who is deeply concerned about him. In contrast, Huck Finn is alone, has no home, and his father is the town drunkard, who beats him up. Huck has no one to take care of him. The two boys are the poles apart; Tom, who is a dreamer, leads a life through romantic novels and has his ups and downs. Huck is very different and more down to earth He is more interested in what is happening right now in the real world. Huck rarely leaves Tom aside, because the two of them are like brothers. As the story unfolds both boys share experiences and even a treasure! And learn how to rely on one another.

As a conclusion, I would like to insist on the friendship between Tom and Huck: not only do the learn thanks to one another, they also learn about themselves as they go through various experiences they grow more mature and self-confident. It a true bildungsroman and certainly Mark Twain’s masterpiece.

La voici:

I’m going to talk about the notion of Spaces and Exchanges. First of all I would like to give a definition of exchange. Spaces can be an areas or a place that are used or available for a specific purpose or a blank area between two things or elements. Exchanging can be a continuous movement or circulation; the act of giving or receiving in return or something that is given or received as a substitute for something else. In today’s modern-day world these exchanges can take several forms: economic (work exchanges, exchange of goods, trading across borders), cultural (exchange of ideas, information, education), movement of people (immigration, student exchanges…). How the exchanges manifest in chaos? Solidarity
In order to illustrate this notion, I’m going use two photos representing a man calling for help and flooded houses after Hurricane Katrina, a text intituled “Solidarity in chaos” by Yes ! Magazine, and an extract from The Ellen degeneres Show of 2012 in which Ellen interviewing Brad Pitt in Lower Ninth Ward.

Immigration flows are the source of physical exchanges. Borders, which are boundaries between two spaces and can be seen as an opening and more countries welcome immigrants. In fact, human flows can take places, in particular at the time of catastrophes.
In 2005, the hurricane Katrina touched the American States but particulary Louisiana. It was an incredibly strong storm, the largest hurricane in history of the United States.
Firstly, we will shows that Louisiana is a physical exchange land in time of disasters and then we will see that exchanges could be morals with BP's intervention during the hurricane.

1- On these two images, we can see the destruction left behind in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. The death toll reached over one thousand eight hundred people and devastation was horrendous.
In the first picture shows a black man who is powerless, downhearted, distraught and desperate. He is calling for help, food and water because he is starwing to death, he is thirsty. He hasn’t had drinks or food for two days. They don’t have gas to leave so they are stranded here. He feels abandoned. there is a man with a sign asking for help. He looks defenseless and at a loss. The words are shocking and expose the harsh reality. The first image shows us the destruction of people’s lives and the desperation they felt as they appealed for aid. Hundreds of thousands of residents were left unemployed, not to mention the extensive number of homes and lives destroyed by Katrina.
The second photo shows houses under water and streets which have vanished, totally flooded. The second one shows the physical destruction of the landscape and people’s homes. Several local industries were affected including oil, gas and forest industries.

2- The text is about the “aftermath of hurrivcane Katrina”, about the “solidarity”. Years on, the relief effort still continues and people are still only just beginning to return to their hometown.
The article focuses on a taxi driver who takes the journalist back to where he used to live in New Orleans. It took his family many years to overcome fear and hardships and eventually come back.
The text concentrates on the Lower Ninth Ward, one the place where the hurricane hit the hardest: one of the poorest areas inhabited by a mostly black population. New Orlean is a city composed by a great part of Black inhabitants and as we know, the USA is a racist country.
So, it illustrates the notion of exchanges because, during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, even if the government and media didn’t help, in contrast with people, a lot of people came to help the victims no matter the colour of their skins.
Some offered a shelter to the homeless, others were willing to contribute to the cleaning or rebuilding effort and to help the population.
These enterprising volunteers refused to let people fend for themselves. The inhabitants of New Orleans were sheltered by volunteers sometimes miles away from the city, often in neighboring states. Millions of volunteers, mostly white, helped either by offering a shelter or by building the devastated neighborhood again.
The authorities were paralyzed with fear but people took control and stood by one another and organized help.
Millions of white volunteers from other areas came in and worked alongside the victims and put aside their different.

This article show that people don’t give up. The tone of this text is quite optimistic. They are ready to struggle and stand by defenseless victims regardless of wealth, race or origin. The key values are dedication, will, love resilience, creativity, and solidarity. These values enable the victims to survive and face hardships
The text illustrates best the notion of space s and exchanges because of the solidarity between all the people. But It also illustrates the notion locations and forms of power because of the government which did nothing to help New Orleans’inhabitants and the power of the media.

II- The journalist’s video about the devastation in Lower Ninth Ward, New Orlean, Louisiana, concernes Brad Pitt, an influential people, who has helped in the disaster. Indeed, with his foundation "Make It Right" and his determined, he did fantastic work. It took them 3 months to rebuils 75 amazing houses. Brad wanted to build other houses. The new houses have been built for safety. Some houses are higher than the others. They have been built on stilts so that they cab resist another Katrina. Besides, they are sustainable and environment friendly, indeed, they generate more energy than they consume. So it is a new way to build houses.

Conclusion
Thus, Louisiana is a vast land of human exchanges, particularly during Katrina and internal migrations were caused to come to their aid.
But is it necessary that disasters occur so that men trade but above values are born?

Je me suis déjà beaucoup investie, non? 🆒
