What is the American Dream?
Introduction:
The first man who used the term « American Dream » was an American historian: James Truslow Adams. Actually, he wrote a book named “The Epic of America”, published in 1931 in which he used that expression. He wrote his book when the USA are was suffering under the Great Depression. This term was in fact used to describe the political and social expectations.
The American Dream is the notion that the American social, economic, and politic system makes success possible for every individual.
The American dream is the idea that everyone cans success professionally and personally in the States thanks to his work, his will and his courage. This ideology was born at the XVI century. The apogee of the American dream resides in the Hollywood’s constructions. We can ask what is the American dream today? Does American dream is different today than before?
First, the Amercian dream was borned in the XVII century, when the pilgrims leave Europe to join the USA in hope to discover a new world of milk and honey. But, in the XIX century the forty-niners are always at the pursuit of success and they all rush to California since the gold’s discover in Sutter’s Mill’ sawmill (Coloma, California) by James Marshall. This discovery entraine of real migration to the west of thousand people who leave everything: women and children and begin a difficult and expensive trip in the unique purpose to make a fortune in the gold.
The XX century is the century which illustrate more the « American Dream » first because it is during the XX century that this term was used first and his definition.
The many immigrants sailed across the ocean to reach the Promised Land (another myth/the land of plenty/ the land of milk and honey, opportunities.
They were looking forward to education, employement, prosperity and success. They were eager for freedom
A better future for their children and themselves.
I) The American dream during the XX century
First the American Dream for people was to have a pretty house, a pretty family and to have material things, which show that we have succeed.
The American Dream inspires a national feeling of peace, freedom and liberty (The statue of Liberty is the symbol of freedom, hope, brighter future for immigrants., Racial equality with Martin Luther King) it’s the pursuit of happiness by the success. And we could say that, finally “American dream” means “Perfect life” and a lot of opportunities, the hard work in a society with a few barriers.
For millions of immigrants, the US represented/embodied the promised land, a land of plenty and free enterprise. The immigrants escaped from/fled their countries for political, religious and economy reasons. Some suffered from hugger/starvation, unemployement/joblessness, persecutions and discriminations.
They were often destitude and dreamed of starting from scratch. They hoped to achieve success nd to be wealthy and well fed
But the year 1921 marked a turning point because of the rise of nativism. Indeed, native American began to demand to be favoured in 1920; they awnted advantages over the immigrants. In 1921, the country experienced a new mentality. Indeed, it was the rise of nativism. American born people demanded quotas based an national origin. Since the quota Laws in 1924, American people had advantages over immigrants and the USA selected immigrants by nationality. Fortunately, these laws were abolished in 1965. But nativism still exist in the US

In the XXI century the American Dream ever exist but it is based on clichés like the road 66, Las Vegas, the big cars and all the famous things who compose America in our imagination. Wall Street, New York, the famous taxis, Hollywood, Barack Obama (the first black president of the USA)…
But, now the mentality in the USA has really changed. Actually, the American dream is not to have a pretty house and to success anymore. Of course it is ever based on material things but now American are in competition. It is very important for them to have more and more than the others. They want to have the biggest car, they want to have the biggest house… Finally, the importance is not to success anymore, it’s just to be rich and to have a lot of things who suggest that we are rich.
Before, the American dream means that when there is was a will there was a way and that no mater where we were from we could succeed but now there is more and more poverty, people aren’t sure that they can succeed anymore and the migrants are refused. As we know, Trump, the new American President wants to make a big wall to separate the frontier between Mexico and America.
